I use meta names to do this with my blogger posts.  My post content is
wrapped in a div id=postBody.  I enabled the automatic metanames and then
search only within the div.postbody elements.  That excludes all of the
unrelated markup.  Perhaps you can do something similar with pipermail.

swish-e -f foo.idx -w div.postbody=(search query)
