I just added more info to my log, and I found something interesting: I
don't think it's swish-e which is blocking anything. In fact, it's not
even running when all the searches are frozen and waiting, and when
finally all the searches are running, it gives results very quickly. 

I'm quite sure it's in fact IIS/PHP which are waiting. I can't figure
out why, but I don't think it's related to swish-e at all. So I posted
my request in the wrong place :)
