Take a look at http://swish-e.org/docs/filter.html .

Then look at DirTree.pl in the distribution for how SWISH::Filter is
used by programs to convert file formats.

There's already filters for doc, pdf, excel, ID3 tags, and IPTC photo
data.  And there's a filter for Open Document a user is developing.
