Is there a way to search by Exclusion of elements ie a NOT xyz switch

Hi all,

I can see lots of ways to search and index for positive matching

Eg: title=fred

Is there a way to define searches and indexes by exclusion instead?

Eg: title NOT fred

Or in an indexing example
indexDirectory \www\fred
but NOT \www\fred\xml

ie (index all subdirectories of www\fred but not the xml directory).

Thanks again in advance for any assistance.
