Ah! The short (cheep) answer is you are running 5.00503. Perl is at 5.8
and you missed an entire release set of 5.6.x!
The real answer is 5.8 is forgiving, so it seems. It builds without errors
on my machine. I'll send you an updated version soon that will work for
