-5988 words?

I wish I had something to offer.  Are you sure you need to merge?  How many
files are you indexing.

I did this yesterday with 2.1-dev:

23492 files indexed.  270692750 total bytes.
Elapsed time: 00:04:28 CPU time: 00:01:50
Indexing done!

Used about 60M of memory.
