I didn't see where the makefile tried to run make man (in the doc
directory).  Humm.

Don't have time to look, but I just did this.  (Ignoring the minor
complaints of the pod2text parser...)  Do you have the pod2man program?

No.  Look at the doc/Makefile and you will see that install-man has man as
a dependency.
