Thanks to everyone who helped me on this!

It turns out the online instructions work just fine with one exception.
Under OS X, the gcc compiler is named cc and is located inside /usr/bin.

I spent a good half hour searching my hard disk for "gcc" using 
Sherlock, whereis, and every other tool I get my hands on.
